We all sweat. Each of us typically has between 3 and 4 million sweat glands covering our bodies and amazingly, we can produce around 11 litres of sweat during a 24hr period.

The main reason we sweat is for thermoregualtion. This is a process by which moisture produced by the body is carried to the skin's surface via our sweat glands, which on contact with air, cools the body down. The 'eccrine' fluid produced during thermoregualtion is light, clear and dissipates quickly and rarely causes problems.

This is not the case with 'appocrine' sweat. This is a thick, heavy and viscous liquid that is a genetic hangover from a time when scent was important to humans for communication – our smells determined who we were (family members), how we felt (fear, happiness), what our intentions were (aggression, mating) etc. Thankfully we now communicate via other methods such as speech or facial expressions and so the problem of sweat and odour does not fit in with modern lifestyles.

Over production of sweat is a serious problem for a significant amount of people. Excessive sweating is embarrassing, restrictive and can have serious effects on daily living.
